Authorities in Ibiza have taken decisive action against Illegal Tourist Accommodation in Ibiza. On 12 September 2025, the Consell Insular de Ibiza and the Ayuntamiento de Sant Joan sealed a property operating illegally as both a tourist lodging and yoga centre. This marks a landmark enforcement under the island’s strengthened legal framework.

What Happened

Inspectors from the Consell, local police, and Sant Joan’s Urban Planning department carried out multiple inspections. These uncovered serious violations at a property in Benirràs. The site offered tourist lodging without a licence and functioned as an unauthorized yoga centre. There were also unlawful wooden cabins built on protected rustic land. Authorities found that the property used signage, reception facilities, and accommodations like hotel services.

Spanish regional law changed this year to grant stronger powers to act swiftly against tourist accommodation irregularities. Authorities activated Ibiza’s Plan de Choque contra el Intrusismo to enforce rules, suspend activity, and impose significant sanctions.

The proposed sanction for this particular case reaches €250,000. Sant Joan de Labritja also plans an additional €165,000 fine and a total prohibition of further activity.

Previous Infractions And Enforcement Context

This is not an isolated case. The same yoga centre in Benirràs had previously received orders to demolish illegal wooden cabins. Despite that, the structures remained and were still inhabited. Across Ibiza, the Plan de Choque has led to increased inspections, removal of unlawful holiday let listings, and a sharp decline in properties operating without proper licences.

Why It Matters

Illegal tourist accommodation strains Ibiza’s housing supply, disrupts urban planning, and undermines environmental protections. Land misuse in rustic areas like Benirràs threatens conservation goals. The new enforcement sends a strong message: operating without a licence or ignoring land use rules carries serious consequences.

The closure and sanctioning of this property mark a pivotal moment in Ibiza’s campaign against tourism-related infractions. With stronger laws, increased inspection capacity, and greater cooperation between authorities, the era of overlooking illegal operations appears to be over. The crackdown highlights the new reality facing Illegal Tourist Accommodation in Ibiza.
