Balearic Islands Reach Record High in Human Pressure

Record-Breaking Human Pressure in the Balearic Islands

On August 7th, the Balearic Islands saw a remarkable human pressure peak with 2,079,541 people present, combining both residents and visitors. According to the latest data from the Instituto de Estadística de las Islas (Ibestat), this marks the highest number of people ever recorded in the archipelago.

Population Growth and Its Impact

The Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) reports that as of July 1st, the Balearic Islands had 1,238,812 registered inhabitants. During the peak, the actual population exceeded this number by 67.8%, indicating that two out of every five individuals were non-residents. This surge underscores the islands’ attractiveness as a top tourist destination.

Yearly Comparison Shows a Steady Increase

Comparing the maximum daily human pressure from 2023 to 2024 reveals a 1.9% increase, rising from 2,041,559 to 2,079,541 people. Additionally, the minimum daily population this year stands at 1,216,864, a 2.1% rise from 1,192,320 in 2023. This steady growth reflects the Balearic Islands’ enduring appeal and the challenges of managing increased visitor numbers.

Regional Variations in Human Pressure

Mallorca Maintains Consistent Ratios

Mallorca shows a consistent ratio of human pressure, maintaining a 1.6 ratio in both 2023 and 2024. This stability indicates effective management of tourist influx and resident needs on the largest island of the archipelago.

Menorca and Pitiusas Experience Changes

Menorca saw a slight decrease in its human pressure ratio, dropping from 2.4 in 2023 to 2.3 in 2024. Similarly, the Pitiusas islands experienced a decline from a ratio of 2.3 to 2.1. These changes suggest a balanced distribution of tourists across the islands, easing some pressure from previously overburdened areas.
