Awaiting Further Test Results

There are an additional 20 possible cases under investigation throughout the Balearic Islands. Fernando Fernández, the Director General of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development, stated that while the disease is spreading, only cases confirmed by positive PCR tests are officially reported.

Vaccination Efforts Underway

The government has secured 500,000 doses of the Blue Tongue vaccine from Syva, an authorised laboratory in Spain. Delivery is expected in early December. The vaccination campaign is planned to start in the second week of December. The vaccine requires only one dose in sheep and is effective against both serotype 8 and serotype 4, enhancing the immunity of the livestock.

Preventative Measures

Until the vaccination campaign begins, authorities urge farmers to maintain strict preventative measures. These include disinfecting and delousing animals and adhering to protocols for the movement of livestock both within and outside the Balearic Islands. These steps are crucial to prevent further spread of Blue Tongue Disease in Ibiza.

Restrictions on Livestock Events

Current regulations prohibit the movement of susceptible species for leisure activities, such as fairs and exhibitions, during the restriction period. Authorities will evaluate each case individually outside these periods to ensure the safety of the livestock population.
