In a shocking incident in Ibiza, Civil Guard agents arrested a British man suspected of fatally running over Bernat Ribas, a 49-year-old Ibizan cyclist. The accused, without a driving license, surrendered himself at the Civil Guard offices in Sant Antoni. The fatal hit and run occurred along the Camí de Benimussa in Sant Josep.

Civil Guard agents apprehended the 35-year-old British national late on Wednesday night, following his voluntary submission at the Ses Païsses post. Moreover, the authorities suspect him of several crimes, including:

  • Operating a vehicle without a license

The investigators learned that the accused had never obtained authorization to drive.

Ribas was cycling with a companion, Toni Tur ‘Sopes’, on Tuesday afternoon when a Jeep Wrangler hit him. The impact was so severe that Ribas died instantly. Shockingly, the driver did not stop and fled the scene, leaving Ribas and Tur ‘Sopes’.

Civil Guard agents, specifically from the Traffic Accident Investigation and Analysis Group (GIAT), swiftly acted and found the abandoned Jeep around 15 hours after the incident. It was located near the Casita Verde, a mere 10 minutes from the scene of the fatal hit and run.

Importantly, finding the vehicle played a pivotal role in the investigation. It enabled the investigators to identify the owner and narrow their search. Consequently, the Civil Guard ramped up the controls throughout Ibiza, tightening the net on the suspect.
