Ecologists call for a gradual reduction of cruise ships in Ibiza
GEN-GOB, an environmental group, is calling for the limit of cruise ships arriving at the port of Ibiza to four per week. They propose a gradual reduction until a complete ban of docking these types of vessels.
Effects on the environment, society and historical heritage are some of the consequences highlighted by the ecologists, who emphasise the need for a “gradual reduction” of cruise ship arrivals until “complete disappearance.” This summer alone, there are expected to be 200 cruise ship arrivals at the port of Ibiza, which is equivalent to the CO2 emissions of 2.4 million cars.
Environmental Impact
These figures “completely nullify all efforts” to reduce pollution emissions from road traffic, according to the ecologists. The group also highlighted the impact of cruise ships on energy consumption, noting that the nightly consumption of each ship is twelve times greater than that of a conventional hotel.
Furthermore, the ecologists highlight the “huge” amounts of sulphur oxide, nitrogen oxides and heavy metals that “erode facades and monuments.” They particularly highlight the damage to the walls and interiors of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ibiza’s historic old town.
Wetland Destruction
The ecologists also warn of the impact on the Talamanca Ses Feixes wetland, an environmental treasure currently undergoing rehabilitation, which is also affected by the influx of cruise ships.
Waste Management
According to GEN-GOB’s study, each cruise ship generates one tonne of waste per day with an average of 2,700 passengers on board, and the management of waste is “a mystery.”
Social Impact In terms of social impact, the ecologists warn of the “massification” caused by the sudden arrival of thousands of people, which adds to the existing crowds that come to the city and other areas of the island during summers.
Increased Arrivals Finally, the ecologists note that the tax on these ships in Catalonia and the restriction on arrivals in Palma could lead to an increase in the number of arrivals in Ibiza in the coming years.
