Formentera Winter Stargazing Returns With Free Night Sky Sessions

Formentera Welcomes Back Its Winter Stargazing Programme
Formentera is once again inviting the public to reconnect with the night sky this winter.
The Consell Insular has relaunched its astronomy outreach programme, offering free guided stargazing sessions during December and January.
The initiative, known as Formentera Winter Stargazing, takes advantage of the island’s clear winter skies.
This season provides some of the best conditions of the year for observing stars, planets, and distant galaxies.
With reduced light pollution and longer nights, winter allows deeper views of the cosmos.
Organisers aim to make astronomy accessible while highlighting Formentera’s exceptional natural environment.
Why Winter Offers The Best Night Skies
Formentera holds official Starlight certification, recognising its low levels of light pollution.
This distinction places the island among Europe’s most respected destinations for night sky observation.
The programme also emphasises environmental awareness.
By showcasing the quality of the island’s skies, the organisers encourage responsible lighting and night-time conservation.
Each session includes guided explanations that place observations within a wider cosmic context.
The focus remains educational, inclusive, and suitable for all ages.

December Session Details
The first event takes place on 17 December between 21:00 and 23:00.
The chosen location is the Ses Eres gardens, a space well suited to group observation.
Participants will observe key winter highlights, including the Orion Nebula and the Andromeda Galaxy.
Jupiter will also be visible, alongside the Pleiades and the bright star Sirius.
Many of these objects can be seen without specialised equipment.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to photograph celestial bodies using telescopes provided on site.

January Stargazing At Cala Saona
A second observation session is scheduled for 16 January 2026 at 21:00.
It will take place at Cala Saona, one of the darkest areas on the island.
This location offers excellent visibility during winter months.
Its conditions allow clearer planetary views and deeper sky observation.
The choice of Cala Saona reinforces the programme’s focus on protecting dark sky locations.
Science, Community, And Low-Season Experiences
Formentera Winter Stargazing remains free and open to the general public.
No previous knowledge of astronomy is required to take part.
Through this programme, the Consell Insular strengthens its commitment to scientific outreach.
The initiative also adds cultural value to the island during the quieter tourist season.
By combining education, sustainability, and shared experiences, the programme celebrates Formentera’s night skies.
It offers residents and visitors a rare chance to experience the island in a different light.
