Night Shift Obligation

Responding to Public Concerns

Last winter, the council received several complaints regarding the lack of available taxis during late-night hours. To address this issue, they have introduced a compulsory night shift for taxi drivers. While drivers can still choose their daytime schedules, at least six taxis must now operate during the night to ensure adequate service.

Adjustment from Initial Proposal

Initially, the council proposed a minimum of eight taxis for the night shift. However, after discussions with the main taxi drivers’ association, they agreed to reduce the number to six. The association argued that there isn’t sufficient demand to justify more taxis during these hours.

Regulations and Enforcement

Penalties for Non-Compliance

Taxi drivers who fail to comply with the new night duty requirement face a fine of €1,000. The council can monitor compliance through real-time GPS tracking systems, ensuring that the mandated taxis are operational during required hours.

Previous Issues with Night Service

Councillor Rubén Sousa noted that companies like Baleària had previously complained about the shortage of taxis for passengers arriving on late-night ferries. The new measures aim to prevent such issues by improving the Ibiza night taxi service.

Winter Taxi Operations

Taxi Fleet Availability

Ibiza holds over 150 fixed taxi licences. During the off-season months from November to April, about one-third of these taxis are required to rest daily. This means approximately 100 taxis are active during these months, with the new regulations ensuring better night coverage.

Collaborative Efforts

Sousa emphasised that the measures were agreed upon in consultation with the majority taxi drivers’ association. The goal is to balance the needs of the public with the operational realities of taxi drivers during the less busy winter months.

The implementation of mandatory night shifts for taxis is a significant step towards enhancing the Ibiza night taxi service. The council hopes these measures will address past complaints and ensure residents and visitors have reliable transportation during all hours.
