Illegal Holiday Rentals in Ibiza: 700 Airbnb Listings Removed Since February

Ibiza Targets Illegal Holiday Rentals: Over 700 Listings Removed from Airbnb Since February
Ibiza has intensified its fight against unregulated tourism by removing over 700 illegal holiday rentals in Ibiza from Airbnb since February 2025. The move comes after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Airbnb, the Consell of Ibiza, Fomento del Turismo, AVAT, and the Hotel Federation.
The agreement aims to improve the quality and sustainability of tourism in Ibiza while cracking down on listings that breach local laws.
Why Are Illegal Holiday Rentals a Problem in Ibiza?
A Growing Concern for Local Authorities
For years, Ibiza has struggled with an influx of unlicensed tourist accommodation. This has inflated housing prices and strained local infrastructure.
The recent MoU now allows inspectors to report unauthorised listings directly to Airbnb, speeding up their removal. So far, illegal holiday rentals in Ibiza are declining, improving conditions for both residents and legal tourism operators.
Caravans and Campers Also Affected
In the past month alone, 100 listings were taken down. These included:
- 70 illegal tourist flats
- 30 caravans, converted vans, and motorhomes
Ibiza’s tourism inspectors remain vigilant. They report new listings daily to ensure swift removal.
“This is not a one-off action,” said Mariano Juan, Conseller for the Fight Against Illegal Activity. “We act every day, identifying and removing illegal holiday rentals in Ibiza to preserve our tourism quality.”
Impact: Listings Drop by Nearly 1,000 Compared to 2024
Compared to April 2024, Airbnb now hosts 1,000 fewer unlicensed listings. The numbers dropped from 2,567 to approximately 1,500.
This 40% reduction signals a turning point. Authorities believe it’s the result of consistent enforcement and closer cooperation with platforms.
What the MoU Means for the Future
The MoU includes:
- Faster removal of illegal listings
- Direct collaboration between inspectors and Airbnb
- Greater transparency in platform accountability
This sets a precedent for other tourist-heavy regions in Spain and Europe.
