Port of Ibiza Invests 20 Million Euros in Upgrades During Low Season

Enhancing Accessibility and Traffic Flow

Starting on 4th November, the port of Ibiza will commence works to improve the Ribera de Poniente road. This project integrates Avenida de Santa Eulària from the Formentera maritime station to the Port Authority offices.

To ensure safety, temporary pedestrian diversions will be in place during the construction. The goal is to improve accessibility and calm motor vehicle traffic. A new cycle lane will be built, connecting with the existing one in the port area. Additionally, a pedestrian sidewalk and a landscaped area will separate pedestrians from cyclists.

Upgrading Passenger Experience

In November, new escalators will be installed at the Botafoc docks, replacing the old ones. The fixed walkways for passenger boarding and disembarking will also be upgraded. With a budget of 2.6 million euros, these works aim to enhance passenger comfort and safety.

The project includes installing two new escalators, replacing four existing ones, and adding a new lift. The project team will cover all stairways with canopies to protect against the weather. They will refurbish the walkways’ pavements and install new railings and canopies.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

The Port Authority will soon begin a significant project to improve the port’s public lighting efficiency. With a budget of 1.5 million euros, funded by the European Union’s Next Generation funds, the new installation will feature low-consumption LED lights.

This initiative will reduce electricity bills by over half and contribute to environmental sustainability by minimising energy consumption and light pollution.

Shore Power Connections and Renewable Energy

Private initiative IGY Ibiza Marina will invest 4.2 million euros to provide shore power connections for yachts. This allows vessels to switch off their engines while docked, reducing atmospheric and noise pollution.

The Port Authority also plans to install two shore power points for ships at the Botafoc docks. Funded with 6 million euros, this will enable ferries to use grid electricity while moored, cutting down emissions and noise.

Moreover, a pilot project will harness wave energy to generate electricity, promoting renewable energy use without harming marine ecosystems.

Future Developments on the Port of Ibiza

By early 2025, the Port Authority will install pergolas with photovoltaic panels in the Botafoc docks car park. With an estimated budget of 1 million euros, this project aims to generate clean electricity while providing shade for vehicles.
