Sant Antoni And The UK To Work At Source To Prevent More Tourist Deaths

Authorities in Sant Antoni de Portmany (Ibiza) and the United Kingdom are uniting to improve tourist safety in Sant Antoni after a tragic summer marked by multiple fatalities. The initiative aims to make young British visitors more aware of risky behaviour and its potential consequences before they even arrive on the island.

Sant Antoni And The UK To Work At Source To Prevent More Tourist Deaths

The collaboration seeks to prevent further loss of life and reduce the number of serious incidents involving tourists, especially those linked to excessive drinking, balcony accidents, and nitrous oxide misuse.

Raising Awareness Before Tourists Arrive

Sant Antoni’s mayor, Marcos Serra, and the councillor for Citizen Safety, Neus Mateu, announced talks with the British Consulate in Ibiza to design educational campaigns that target young travellers “at source”.

These campaigns will include informative videos and online content warning visitors about what they can and cannot do while on holiday. The purpose is simple: help tourists make safer choices and avoid reckless behaviour that leads to tragedy.

This preventive approach marks a significant shift in how authorities manage tourist safety in Sant Antoni, focusing on education instead of reaction.

The Tragic Pattern Behind The New Measures

The urgency comes after a devastating season. At least six young tourists died in Sant Antoni this summer after falling from hotel balconies or other high spots.
Among them were three British nationals, one Turkish, one Belgian, and one Brazilian whose case is being treated as suicide.

Local authorities recognise that these accidents damage Ibiza’s image and that tourist safety in Sant Antoni must become a central priority for the town’s future.

The Battle Against Nitrous Oxide And Other Crimes

Alongside awareness campaigns, the council and security forces are intensifying efforts to combat the illegal sale of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and other street crimes such as phone and tablet theft.

The gas, often inhaled for its euphoric effects, was linked to the death of a young British woman this summer. She was hit by a driver who had reportedly consumed the substance.

Officials urge national lawmakers to follow the UK’s lead, ban recreational nitrous oxide, and keep offenders off the streets longer.

A Cultural Shift In Ibiza’s Tourism Model

Raquel Guasch, the island’s state representative, said prevention must start in travellers’ home countries to reshape Ibiza’s nightlife image. She believes the island should move from a party image to one promoting safer and more respectful leisure.

By promoting tourist safety in Sant Antoni, local leaders aim to redefine Ibiza holidays, balancing enjoyment with greater responsibility.

Looking Ahead

Both governments are actively developing concrete plans and committing to work together in the long term. They aim to reduce risky behaviour, strengthen enforcement, and shift public perception of Ibiza as a safer, more sustainable destination.

If successful, the tourist safety in Sant Antoni plan could guide other European resorts facing youth tourism and nightlife issues.
