Sant Antoni West End Name Change: Residents to Choose a New Identity for the Area

The Sant Antoni West End name change is now a major topic in Ibiza’s political and cultural debate. Local residents may soon decide on a new title for the area traditionally linked with nightlife and tourism.
Why replace the “West End” label?
The socialist group in Sant Antoni argues that the “West End” label arrived in the 1980s through British tour operators. Since then, the nickname has associated the district with wild nightlife, mass tourism and the gradual decline of local commerce. Councillor Cristina Ribas stated that the town does not want a “wild neighbourhood” image to persist. The proposal calls for change, starting with the name.
Public consultation as the key mechanism
The PSOE suggests removing the “West End” tag officially and launching a survey where residents can propose and vote for alternatives. The chosen name should reflect community values, promote coexistence, and be adopted in future tourist promotion campaigns.
Urban renewal and cultural projects
The renaming process complements wider regeneration efforts. Artist Okuda San Miguel has already transformed Santa Agnès Street with his vibrant mural “Endless Rainbow Walk”. His work introduces colour, shade and inclusive symbols to revitalise the district. The local council has also invested in pedestrianisation, shopfront improvements, and incentives for new cafés, restaurants and family-friendly businesses.
Mixed reactions from the community
Mayor Marcos Serra welcomed the cultural initiatives, highlighting their positive impact on daytime tourism and commerce. He underlined that attracting families during the day is essential for sustainable growth. Some business owners, however, claim that previous municipal support has not been enough to encourage bars to diversify their activity. Still, new shops, ice-cream parlours and accessory stores are opening, signalling the start of a shift in the area’s character.
Looking ahead
The Sant Antoni West End name change debate is more than symbolic. It marks a wider attempt to balance tourism with neighbourhood life, ensuring both residents and visitors can enjoy a more vibrant and sustainable Sant Antoni.
