A Supermoon with a Twist

What is a Supermoon?

A supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit during a full moon phase. This makes the moon appear larger and brighter than usual, offering a spectacular sight for onlookers.

The Partial Eclipse Explained

Tonight’s event is special because it includes a partial lunar eclipse. During this phenomenon, the Earth partially blocks the sun’s light from reaching the moon, causing a small “bite” to appear on the lunar surface. About 3.5% of the moon’s visible surface will be affected.

When and Where to Watch

Visibility Across Continents

The second supermoon of 2024 with partial eclipse will be visible to the naked eye across Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Unlike solar eclipses, it’s safe to observe a lunar eclipse without any protective eyewear.

Timings in Spain

In Spain, both on the mainland and in the Canary Islands, the eclipse will begin at 4:12 am local time. It will reach its maximum at 4:44 am, and the moon will return to its full glory by 5:18 am, according to the National Geographic Institute.

Cloud Cover Concerns

The Spanish Meteorological Agency warns that cloud cover may obstruct the view in many areas, particularly in eastern Spain, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands. It’s advisable to check local weather forecasts to ensure clear skies.

Final Celestial Events of 2024

This event is one of the last major astronomical happenings of the year. An annular solar eclipse is expected on October 2, visible only in certain parts of South America. So, don’t miss the chance to witness the second supermoon of 2024 with partial eclipse tonight!
