Tourism Decline Hits Ibiza and Formentera: July Sees a 7.2% Drop

in News, Tourists

The popular tourist destinations of Ibiza and Formentera faced a significant decline in visitor numbers this July. According to the latest data, tourism in these islands dropped by 7.2% compared to the same month last year. This decline raises concerns among local businesses and authorities as these islands heavily rely on tourism for economic stability.

Tourism Decline Hits Ibiza and Formentera: July Sees a 7.2% Drop

Tourism Numbers Take a Hit

In July, Ibiza and Formentera received a total of 665,723 tourists. This marked a stark 7.2% decrease from the previous year’s figures. The downturn in visitor numbers contrasts sharply with the trends seen in other Balearic Islands. For instance, Mallorca experienced a 5.03% increase in tourism, attracting over 2 million visitors, while Menorca saw a smaller decline of 4.25%.

Economic Impact of the Decline

Despite the decrease in visitors, the economic impact, although softened, was still noticeable. Ibiza and Formentera’s tourism revenue in July exceeded 912 million euros. However, this figure reflects a 1.34% decline compared to last year. The average daily spending per tourist also dropped by 5.57%, with visitors spending around 215.31 euros each day.

Meanwhile, other islands showed different trends. Mallorca saw a significant boost in its tourism revenue, which grew by over 21%, reaching nearly 2.84 billion euros. Menorca’s revenue increased slightly by 2.34%, totaling 411 million euros.

National Tourism Trends Remain Positive

On a national level, Spain’s tourism sector performed well in July. The country welcomed 10.8 million tourists, a 7.26% increase from the previous year. The year-to-date figure reached 53.3 million tourists, marking a 12% growth compared to the first seven months of 2023. This shows that despite regional declines like those in Ibiza and Formentera, Spain remains a top destination for international travelers.

The United Kingdom continues to be the leading source of tourists to Spain, with over 2 million visitors in July, a 2.6% increase from the previous year. Other significant contributors include France and Germany, which also saw growth in the number of tourists visiting Spain.

Tourism Decline in Ibiza and Formentera: Looking Ahead

The 7.2% tourism decline in Ibiza and Formentera in July underscores the need for strategic planning to attract more visitors in the future. With the global tourism landscape continually shifting, these islands must adapt and innovate to regain their momentum and ensure long-term economic resilience.
