How High Prices are Threatening Ibiza’s Tourism Industry
Balearics at Risk of Pricing Themselves Out of the Market
Visitors to Ibiza rated the island an 8.5 out of 10 in a recent survey conducted by Anàlisi Turístic d’Eivissa i Formentera (ATEIF). The non-profit organisation aims to gather real data to evaluate the situation and evolution of tourism on the island. The survey found that while visitors enjoyed their stay, they rated the high prices, crowds and public transport negatively.
ATEIF president, Eduardo Manero, stressed the importance of obtaining real information to make “correct decisions” and anticipate “possible problems.” With data from ongoing surveys, the organisation hopes to contribute to making Ibiza an “intelligent” tourist destination by leveraging technological tools.
High Satisfaction and Concerns Over Costs
The study surveyed 5,186 visitors in 2022, making it the most extensive study conducted on the island of Ibiza to date. While visitors complained about high prices, 43% of those surveyed said they would return to the island. This figure rose to 47% in the national market.
Visitors from the USA, Britain and Germany gave high satisfaction ratings of 8.9, 8.8 and 8.6 out of 10, respectively. Nationals and Italians gave a rating of 8.4 out of 10.
High Praise and High Prices for Ibiza’s Tourism Industry
The study found that the average daily expenditure was €167 and the average holiday budget was €1,471. The average stay, expenditure and budget varied according to each municipality. Visitors highlighted the beaches, environment and nature as the most valued aspects of their trip.
ATEIF aims to continue conducting surveys with the help of public administrations to establish a tourist observatory that will allow for a strategic vision and decision-making for effective and efficient tourism promotion.
