Vehicle Numbers in Ibiza Surpass Island’s Population

in News

Vehicle numbers in Ibiza: Ibiza has reached a surprising milestone: the island now has more vehicles than residents. According to the 2023 Ibiza Sustainability Report, there are 1,010 vehicles for every 1,000 inhabitants. This situation highlights the urgent need to rethink transportation on the island.

High Motorisation Rate Continues

The motorisation rate in Ibiza remains high, even with a slight decrease from 1,053 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants in 2022. This small drop is due to an increase in population and minimal changes in the number of vehicles.

Impact on Sustainable Mobility

During the European Sustainable Mobility Week 2024, the IbizaPreservation Sustainability Observatory emphasised the urgency to reduce private vehicle use. They advocate for boosting sustainable transport options like public buses, cycling, and walking. Ibiza has more vehicles than residents, which puts pressure on the environment and infrastructure.

Trends in Vehicle Numbers

The total number of vehicles increased slightly from 159,895 in 2022 to 160,835 in 2023. While the number of buses decreased by 28%, from 423 to 302, and cars decreased by 1%, from 98,405 to 97,273, the long-term trend shows significant growth. Since 2013, the vehicle fleet has grown by 28.5%, and since 2003, it has increased by 78%.

Call for Action

Elisa Langley, technical coordinator of the Observatory, points out that vehicles from other regions, brought in for work or tourism, aren’t included in these figures. This means the actual pressure from vehicles is even higher. Ibiza has more vehicles than residents, underscoring the need for immediate action.

Solutions for a Greener Ibiza

The Observatory suggests several strategies to reduce vehicle numbers:

  • Promote public transport and improve connectivity.
  • Invest in infrastructure for bicycles and pedestrians.
  • Implement carpooling and ridesharing policies.

“These measures not only reduce emissions and fossil fuel dependence but also enhance social equity and quality of life,” concludes Langley.

Vehicle numbers in Ibiza: Conclusion

Ibiza’s situation is a wake-up call for urgent changes in transportation habits. With vehicles outnumbering residents, it’s time to embrace sustainable mobility for the benefit of the island and its people.
